This swrod would have been carried through the russo-japanese war, and during world war ii. This sword has a machine-made blade with acid-etched yakiba. Teh nakago is unsigned, and has slanted file marks.
This sword has a 27 3/4 blade (measured properly from blade tip to the bottom of the notch in the habaki). The sword handle measures 8 1/4 long. Note the complicated, highly-detailed design on the backstrap. This sword has gold-washed handle fittings.
The rain pattern habaki is silver-washed. The blakc handle peg is made of horn.
The grip is whiet same. The metal scabbard is either nickel or chrome-plated. The scabbard is of the type that had two ashi/hangers, one of which is of the removable type. The lower ashi for this sword wsa removed long ago. This vintaeg japanese kyu-gunto sword is in beautiful condition. The gold wash on the handle fittings on this particular sword is nearly 100% still. All of the wire wrappings are intact. The blade has absolutely on pitting. There are only minor carbon finish stains on the blade. The artiifcially etched hamon is 70% visible. Nicks in the blade edge.
The blade is nice and straight. The blade has no marks from sharpening as the edge appears original. There is an occasional scratch on the blade from use. The horn peg is about half its original length-some would choose to replace it (cost about $10-15). The saya/scabbard plating is 95%+ with only some very occasional spots-most of which are confined to the area above the hanger.
